Development
Female rats aging from 3 – 18 months give birth to a maximum of 15 litters. Gestation period 3 weeks. On the average 7 – 10 young per nest. Nursing period 4 weeks. After 3 months the young are sexually mature. Maximum life expectancy circa 2 – 3 years.
Damage
As carriers of disease germs rats are a threat to the public health, like Weil’s disease. They foul everything with droppings. They cause gnawing damageto pipes and wires (failures, short circuit) and to isolation materials.
Prevention
Openings up to a maximum of 0.5 cm wide (because of mice). Prevent junk corners (hiding-places). Prevent food supply as much as possible. Storage of goods in sheds free of walls, doors that close properly, lights that work properly at open doors.
