Development
Female rats are sexually mature when they are 3 months old. The gestation period is 20 – 24 days. They give birth to 6 litters of 6 to 10 young a year. The maximum age for the black rat is 4 years.
Way of living
The black rat is an excellent climber and jumper. It prefers to eat grains, but likes everything. Droppings are circa 1 cm long and 0.2 – 0.3 cm thick.
Damage
As carriers of disease germs rats are a threat to the public health. They foul everything with droppings. They cause gnawing damageto pipes and wires (failures, short circuit) and to isolation materials.
Prevention
Openings up to a maximum of 0.5 cm wide (because of mice). Prevent junk corners (hiding-places). Prevent food supply as much as possible. Storage of goods in sheds free of walls, doors that close properly and lights that work properly at open doors.
